Part 3: Sectors of Human Services - Criminal Justice and Legal Services

Part 4: Sectors of Human Services - Health Care

Open to download resource. The overall social determinants of health involve access to a range of needs such as good nutrition and housing that reflect many I&R referrals. However, the health sector is usually more narrowly defined in terms of primary disease diagnosis and treatment. I&Rs are not qualified to provide health advice but can guide people towards the information, preventive and support services that they might need.

Part 5: Sectors of Human Services - Income Support and Employment

This sector includes a wide range of programs that enable an individual to secure and maintain the type of employment that ensures economic self-sufficiency; or else, if a person is unable to maintain full-time employment either temporarily or permanently (for example, if an individual is retired and/or has serious disabilities), to access public assistance or social insurance programs that ensure their basic well-being. These programs are often also open to people whose employment pays a wage that is not enough for an individual or family to live on without additional support.

Human services refer to how the needs of an individual, family, or community can be met for issues that are not usually day-to-day commercial transactions. Community, social, and health services are all part of “human services,” and each of those main components - community, social, and health - have definitions that are likely to overlap.
